The postmortem
What lived.What died.What stayed.
- The original bet
- That people were exhausted by their phones and would take the challenge: one hour, screen locked black, no way out. That discomfort was the point, and enough people would want to prove to themselves they could sit in it.
- The first warning
- Friends I gave it to test came back with the same word: restrictive. Too conceptual. They got it intellectually - a black square, a full hour, no cheating - but nobody wanted to actually live inside it.
- Cause of death
- Zero distribution. No audience before the product existed. Built something that asked people to sit in a black screen for an hour - too abstract, too philosophical, too much to ask from strangers scrolling past.
- Lesson left behind
- Build the audience before you build the product. The best thing in the world dies alone with no one to show it to. Especially if what you built asks people to step outside their comfort zone.
- If we started again
- Build the channels first. Find the audience before writing a line of code. A product this conceptual doesn't sell itself by existing - it needs people already primed to want it, waiting, before launch day even happens.
